No you'll need to visit PRS Counter and meet CRS.

Go with your ticket and ID proofs. Also take along application to CRS, Indian Railways requesting to change the boarding station before 24 hours of the departure time.

But if there is change of boarding station for 1 stop only then it is not required.

TTE's unofficially always wait till another station before taking the seat empty and reallocating to some other person. That's internal rule.
